The Sugar Loaf is, along with Christ the Redeemer, one of the icons of the city of Rio de Janeiro. Located on a small peninsula that marks the entrance to Guanabara Bay, and it stand two tall hills staggered: the Urca of about 220 m. Sugarloaf and 575 m.
Access is located opposite the Plaza General Tiburcio, and the cable car station purchased tickets for any of the two stages. The price of both sections is about $ 8 per person. The station is a basic infrastructure for tourists, composed souvenir shops, toilets, information center, displays with information and photos of the history of the cable car. The service operates between 8 and 22 pm. and between each output there about 30 minutes and may be less if there is enough public. Every year one million people do this walk.

The first section ends in the Morro de Urca. Since the start of the route goes pounding excitement of the visitors, as the cabin is fully glazed and can immediately appreciate the magnificent aerial view Vermelha beach and sea. Urca platform is very wide, with paths in the greenery and natural viewpoints at different heights from where you have fantastic views of almost 360 degrees that include Copacabana beach, the sea, the Christ of Corcovado, the center, the Guanabara Bay and Niteoroi.

There is also the possibility of extending the tour, taking a helicopter with different lengths: the shortest flying over Corcovado, the beaches and the Sugar Loaf lasts 7 minutes and costs about $ 43 per person. Soon? Do not believe it is a good choice because the experience is amazing. There are stretches longer if you're a fan of heights and nocturnal tours must be booked in advance.
On the side that faces Botafogo, some athletes make their first experiences in vertical climb. There is a lot of height, but the slope is steep.

How to get there?

Access to Sugarloaf is located on Avenida Pasteur 520 Urca neighborhood, next to Leme, Botafogo and Flamengo. From the center, and any of the southern suburbs are accessible by bus, as many lines passengers to leave a couple of blocks from the cable car station. Even the Tourist Bus City River-blue and orange lines, stops at General Tiburcio Square, opposite the station.




An interesting option is off at Botafogo Cove and from there take the route walking along the bay and see the Yacht Club of Rio de Janeiro and several traditional buildings such as the Faculty of Medicine and the Institute Benjamin Constant. This journey takes about half an hour

A little history

The Sugar Loaf is important not only from the point of view of tourism, but also historical, at its base was initially developed the city of Rio de Janeiro since 1565. The first raids on its summit date from 1817. In 1910 he founded the Society of Air Way Sugarloaf to build the first cable car in Brazil, was inaugurated in 1912 slice up the Morro de Urca. At the cable car station shown photographs of the first tram, made ​​of wood and curtains in the windows, carrying only 23 people.
